ACS Supports Sewa International

As part of its community initiatives, ACS supports Sewa International (Sewa), an organization founded in 2003 and grew out of an India-based humanitarian effort started in 1989. Sewa is a grassroots movement that has transitioned into an international disaster relief organization with a presence in twenty (20) countries and is a lifeline for under-resourced communities. Program efforts include hunger relief, tribal and refugee welfare, support for children and senior citizens, health, and education.

With the emergence of COVID-19, Sewa USA raised more than $700,000, distributed 600,000 units of personal protective equipment, and provided 63,000 hot meals and food kits. Sewa’s generosity extends to sovereign nations; the organization recently made a substantial donation of much-needed medical supplies and fresh produce to members of the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe.

“ACS is proud to support the efforts of Sewa International. Locally, they provide meals to frontline workers at area hospitals, assist students with visa assistance, educate individuals with an H1B visa, and encourage plasma antibody donations to alleviate suffering for those diagnosed with COVID-19,” said Nita Sardana, Vice President of Community Outreach and Corporate Giving.

Nita also recounted a recent community outreach project that included volunteers from Sewa and VHPA to New Seasons Church located in Albany, Georgia. Albany has an estimated population of 1,500 people also has one of the highest per-capita death rates in the United States. More than 140 people have died from novel coronavirus. The Pastor of the New Seasons, Dr. Marcus Glass, expressed this appreciation for Sewa and VHVA volunteers who made the 7-hour roundtrip drive to help those in need.
